OhioLINK Resource Display
May 9, 2002
Some records in the central catalog have an "OhioLINK Resource" display, rather than the regular display of holdings. This happens through the use of codes "g" or (less regularly) "o" as the suppression code value in the bibliographic record. Definitions for these codes are as follows:
g (Bcode 3 only) Display local, Display at central with text "OhioLINK resource"
o (Bcode 3 only) Suppress local display, Display at central with text "OhioLINK resource"
Code "o" is used only in the rare case where a library wishes to contribute cataloging for an OhioLINK resource, but does not want it to display the record locally. Codes "g" and "o" should be used for cataloging resources owned by the consortium. One library's use of these codes affects the display at central, regardless of whether or not the library owns the record at central. So they should be used with care. For example, if one library incorrectly codes a record as "g", it suppresses the holdings of all other libraries that matched with that record. It does not matter whether the library that coded the record was the owner of the bibliographic record at the central site.
Codes "g" and "o" should not be used when
The contributed record describes an electronic resource not owned by the consortium
or
The contributed record describes a print serial with an additional 856 field to link to electronic holdings. (Because then the print holdings are masked by the "OhioLINK Resource" display.)
See these two versions of Milton Quarterly for an example of correct use of the "g" suppression code. OCLC #1697097 describes the print record with an 856 to the EJC version. It is not coded as "g". On the other hand, #37113098 describes the electronic version, and it is coded as "g".
